Research topics

  • The research is focused on different areas that involve the basic aspects and those applied both in the aeronautical and automotive fields. The basic studies are generally aimed at turbulent flows, separate flows, jets. Application studies in the engineering field, on the other hand, concern the control of flows aimed at increasing aerodynamic performance. To this end, control techniques are studied to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase lift in aircraft using both passive current manipulation (Riblets) and active manipulation using large-scale longitudinal vortices generated by jets (continuous and synthetic). Techniques are also being developed to control the wake of cars to reduce their aerodynamic drag using jets injected from the rear base. In this case, the control also uses Machine Learing techniques for closed-loop control. In the field of applied research, wind rotors are also studied for the production of electricity by exploiting the atmospheric wind. The aim is to increase the performance of the rotors by exploiting innovative airfoils. The dominant methodology in all research activities is the experimental one using the wind tunnels present in the Aerodynamics laboratory of the department. For the activities described, wind tunnels and of advanced measurement techniques such as optical anemometry (PIV and StereoPIV), hot wire anemometry, pressure (average and fluctuating) and of friction to the wall (medium and fluctuating) are used.
