Fundamentals of fluid film lubrication: models and applications - prof. Federico Colombo

The course is intended to furnish to students the basis of theory of fluid film lubrication for incompressible fluids. It will involve both theoretical explanations with simple exercises to apply the basic formulas, and also examples of numerical solutions.

Course topics:

  • Introduction
  • Lubrication regimes
  • Fluid properties( Newtonian fluids, pressure/temperature effect on viscosity)
  • Monodimensional Reynolds equation, examples and exercises
  • Numerical solution
  • Bidimensional Reynolds equation, examples and exercises
  • Numerical solutions for steady and transient problems
  • Perturbation method for dynamic identification of the bearing coefficients Industrial applications (axial thrust bearings, journal bearings, tilting pad bearings, squeeze film dampers)
The course will be in English.
